Sony’s Accessibility Controller for PS5 to be Available on December 6th

Sony has announced the release date and pricing details for its new accessibility-focused controller, the Access controller, for PlayStation 5 players. The controller will be globally available on December 6th and will cost $90. Preorders will begin on July 21st. In Canada, the peripheral will be priced at $120 CAD, while in the UK it will cost £80, in Europe €90, and in Japan 12,980 yen.

The highly customizable controller features four 3.5mm aux ports that allow gamers to connect external buttons, switches and other accessories. The box contains 19 button covers and three stick caps to help users find the configuration that works best for them. For example, they may prefer two button-fastened button caps or dome-shaped stick caps instead of the standard one. Additionally, Sony includes 23 interchangeable button cap labels to help gamers identify which input they connect to each button.

Players can assign up to 30 profiles to the Access Controller with different button and stick settings for each. There is an option to disable certain buttons to prevent accidental presses, and users can enable or disable commands.

As previously revealed by Sony, people can connect up to two Access Controllers and one DualSense together to create a “single virtual controller”. This means two or even three people could control the same character, allowing friends and family to lend a helping hand when needed.

Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s vice president of brand, hardware and peripherals, wrote in a blog post that the company has been working on the controller for five years with the help of accessibility organizations and experts. The goal was to develop a series that “allows players with disabilities to play more comfortably and for longer, allowing more players to participate in the joy of gaming.”
